TOXIC YURI JAM 2 PRE MORTEM
Intentions For This Pre Mortem
You've heard of a post mortem, now get ready for a pre mortem. (This is most likely already a thing, so if you know of them, please send me your favorite pre mortems.)
Here I want to write about my intentions, our goals, a bit about my teammates, and how I want to act in a team!
About the Jam
The Toxic Yuri VN Jam 2 is upon us; like many hobbyist game devs, I have done and failed quite a few game jams!
One of the runners of the jam, Nadia Nova, has a post on why anyone can make a visual novel, and there are pleeeenty of resources online to learn everything from Ren'py programming to character/BG art to writing narrative games, and so on. Not to mention googling "how do I do XYZ in Ren'py" as a great template for an internet search.
Intentions for this Game Jam
To have fun.
...Yeah, that's kind of it. I mean, a solid second goal is "to make a finished product", which is truly the most difficult part of game jams. Scope creep is real, and biting off more than you can chew is how you either burn out or leave projects incomplete (ask me how I know).
Aside from that: I can fairly confidently say we just want to write girlthings in precarious situations.
Who's on my team?!
This team is made by a group of my friends and I.
Joan - Programmer
Lee - Musician; BG Artist; Route Writer
Spider - Route Writer
Oh, and about me:
Skaetlett (that's me!) - Scenario Writer; Character Artist, Backup Everything
I'm an erotica writer who's failed quite a few VN jams lolz. I specialize in hypnosis kink and have recently had a brain cell for ballroom dance culture and how it's similar to ownership and D/s dynamics. My wishes for the project: I want to make a story about ballroom dancing and its use in D/s. Any kind of dancing will do honestly.
Collaboration Inspired by Hundred Line
Ah yes, I have to put my favorite game into this random blog post
Hundred Line's way of segmenting route writers is ingenious to me, and I think works perfectly here. The way I have it planned is that we'll decide the central narrative together, and then for each of the routes, the writer will have free reign. They can write dialogue, tropes, kinks as they want. I trust Lee and Spider to write incredible routes, so they won't be micromanaged.
On Leadership & Why Past Game Jams Failed
Truth be told, I've never considered myself a leader.
One of my past game jams, I partnered with my best friend, and we bit off more than we could chew. Not to mention we had very different working styles. Eventually, the demands of the jam plus undergrad work got too much for me, and I had to bow out. And... my friend was kinda pissed. Mainly due to a difference in what we were trying to accomplish along with different working styles. It took me a hot minute to feel like doing a group game jam again.
I think what I'm aiming to do differently is to set the goal as "have fun". It doesn't matter whether or not we make a polished game, hell I told people I don't want to expect to win. (It'll be cool if we do, but there are over 1,000 people in the jam right now, so... yeah you get the issue.)
This past semester, I took a Leadership & Management class for my Master's in Public Health. A lot of people think it's a useless class, and... it's not super useful for public health! But I gained a lot of skills in leadership, emotional intelligence, problem solving, and working in teams -- a lot of it is stuff I think I can use here. Hey, what you can't use for public health, you can use for... non-con toxic yuri jams...? I guess?
Final Thoughts (before the actual start)
GOOD LUCK HAVE FUUUUUN!
